Merseyside

Merseyside is a metropolitan county in North West England, comprising the metropolitan boroughs of Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley and St Helens, together with their towns and communities.

Situated around the River Mersey and the eastern shores of Liverpool Bay, Merseyside has a landscape shaped by its estuary, coastline, rivers, farmland and urban settlements.

Merseyside is located in North West England, at approximately 53.416° N latitude and 2.983° W longitude. These coordinates provide a geographic reference point near Liverpool, rather than the geographic centre of the county.

The area has a long history of maritime trade, shipping, manufacturing and industrial development. During the Industrial Revolution, the growth of Liverpool’s port, transport networks and expanding communities helped shape the towns and settlements that exist today.
